On this week’s Dale Jr. Download podcast NASCAR’s newest inductee into the Hall of Fame discussed his 5th place finish on Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. After that race Dale said that may have been his final start, ever.
To Quote Coach Corso, Not So Fast My Friend
Dale Jr. has one more race in him, maybe.
I would like to do one more. I’m going to keep a really close eye on the Martinsville Xfinity race this year. If it looks fun, I’ll probably do that one next year.” – Dale Jr.
Dale wants another clock. The Xfinity Series will be making their return to Martinsville Speedway this fall for the first time since 2006. Since the restrictions on Cup drivers don’t apply to Dale Jr. he would be eligible to run this race. Martinsville will serve as the cutoff race for the Championship race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Can Dale Get Another Clock?
Dale Jr’s 2014 Cup Series win at Martinsville remains one of the most memorable wins of his career. Holding off Jeff Gordon, bumping Tony Stewart out of the way and subsequently celebrating like it was his first win ever.
In 35 Cup starts at Martinsville Dale has 1 win, 18 Top-10’s, and 13 Top-5 finishes. He has completed 98.4% of the laps in those 35 races and has an average finish of 13.5.
If this race is the penultimate round in 2021 you can bet Dale will race the Xfinity regulars with respect as well. It won’t be chrome horns and door slams like a Kevin Harvick/Ty Dillon truck race. Think more along the lines of Jeff Gordon and Jamie McMurray in 2015.
So can Dale win at Martinsville? Of course, he can. If Dale does manage to find himself taking the checkered flag first it will be the last time we ever see Dale Jr. in a race car.
