During the Daytona 24 broadcast on NBCSN engine builder Doug Yates joined the the question was posed; “Could NASCAR ever run a 24-hour race?”
Of course NASCAR teams can make their engines last long. The real question is should NASCAR be involved in a 24 hour race? We already have the 600 and that can be excruciatingly painful. However, Dale Jr. has an idea and it’s actually really good. Like most of Dale’s idea, unlike Brad K whose ideas are generally idiotic.
IMSA adds a stock car class. Every NASCAR organization fields one car for all the drivers in their stable. But they can only come from the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series. It’s actually a phenomenal idea.
Here are how some of the lineups could look.
Hendrick: Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, Justin Allgaier. Sorry Willy B, Justin is a better road racer.
JGR: Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Erik Jones.
SHR: Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Daniel Suarez, Cole Custer.
RCR: Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon (have to take both), Daniel Hemric, Tyler Reddick. Not to rag on RCR but this is a terrible lineup outside Hemric.
Roush/Front Row: Ricky Stenhouse, Ryan Newman, Michael McDowell, Matt Tifft.
Ganassi: Kyle Larson, Kurt Busch, Jamie Mac (legacy add), Ross Chastain
Team Penske/Wood Brothers: Brad K, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, and Paul Menard.
JTG: Ryan Preece, Chris Buescher, AJ Allmendinger & Marcos Ambrose (legacy adds)
The stock car field already has more entries than the LMP2 class so IMSA might as well just give them the add.
Downside to all of this is the number of pit stops teams will have to make. Pit crews are going to be exhausted, Goodyear is going to be out of their minds. They’ll probably bring a rock hard tire though so it’ll be find. The rain is the other factor that could throw buys off. People like Brad K. are not fans of racing in the rain and stock cars at Daytona in the rain is not a great idea. It’s an idea we’d all entertain though.
Make it happen IMSA. If that bulky hideous Lexus GTD car is out there we might as well throw some stock cars out too.
