Tony Stewart Has Talked To Multiple Teams About Running An IndyCar At Pocono In 2019

Tony Stewart has spoken to multiple teams about running the IndyCar race at Pocono in 2019. Stewart’s plan is to run Pocono to prepare himself for a run at the Indianapolis 500 in 2020, at the age of 49.

Stewart said they have talked to Andretti Autosport, Rahal Letterman Lanigan, Team Penske and said he believes Chip Ganassi would love to have him back for the attempt. Those the heaviest of heavy hitters when it comes to IndyCar teams and all give Stewart a real opportunity to win the race.

Stewart spoke to the media during his promotional event at the 1.44 mile Texas Motor Speedway;

Tony Stewart is a difficult guy to read who very much walks to the beat of his own drummer. The guy could decide tomorrow he wants to run or he could decide this is a crazy idea and I’m not going to do it. After watching that video I honestly have no idea which way he’s leaning.

Robert Wickens’ wreck at Pocono has grabbed everyone’s attention. Multiple drivers have referenced that crash and now Tony Stewart a two-time IndyCar champ has as well. That is certainly on the front of his mind. They could run 100 Pocono races that went crash free and that one race will still be something everyone remembers. You never think about planes landing safely you always think about the worst.

Stewart then takes a shot at Danica for being a sideshow at the speedway this year. Call me crazy but I didn’t think she was a sideshow and honestly thought she had a decent month until she didn’t. It happens.

Overall if Stewart is going to do it he’ll run Pocono next year and the 500 in 2020. He sounded skeptical though when talking about it even saying “49 probably isn’t the age to resurrect an IndyCar career.”

Chances Stewart does run: 20%.
