JR Motorsports announced the driver lineup for their #8 Xfinity car in 2020 Wednesday evening. Three drivers will split time in the fourth JRM car as they compete for the owner’s championship.
In 2019 the #8 car saw a litany of drivers come through its window. Ryan Truex, Zane Smith, Jeb Burton, Regan Smith, Ryan Preece, Sheldon Creed, Chase Elliott, Brett Moffitt, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all strapped into the #8 in 2019. Things will be a little calmer in 2020.
Daniel Hemric will be in the #8 for 21 races in 2020. He’ll be joined by Jeb Burton who will be in the #8 for 11 races and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will round out the lineup with his now traditional 1 race a season.
When Hemric was dumped by Richard Childress Racing back in September he was left with very few options. Hemric’s name was tossed around in discussions at JTG Racing and Front Row Motorsports but neither of those deals ever materialized. Taking a step back to the Xfinity season in a highly competitive car is the perfect move for Hemric.
Shockingly Hemric has never won in a national touring NASCAR series. In his two full-seasons of Xfinity action, he went to the Championship 4 both times. In 2018 he had an average finish of 9th. He has 14 finishes of second and third place. Eventually, he will find his way to victory lane, its just simple probability math.
Hemric will be partnered with Jeb Burton for 11 races. So far through 6 races in the #8 in 2019 Burton has 5 Top-10 finishes. Of the three reoccurring drivers in 2019, he and Zane Smith gave one another a run for their money as being the best in the #8 car. Burton, of course, brings some sponsorship along for the 11 races as he continues his attempt to plow a path into a full-time ride.
Dale Jr. will once again do his traditional one race a season. The team didn’t mention which race but he previously stated he wants to run Homestead in March.
