For being one of the most laid back, low key teams in the sport the Wood Brothers have a thing for the theatrics.
As everyone was just having a casual Tuesday morning sorting through emails the team dropped some bombshell news from their Twitter account.
Damn right we weren’t expecting that. Our friends DM’d us at 9:45 a.m. to say a Matt D. announcement was coming at 10 a.m. but they didn’t know the team. We know the team now and it was Front Row Motorsports or GoFas as some people had predicted.
Matt Dibenedetto moves from the #95 to the famed #21 next year in what can almost be considered a move up. LFR currently runs year old JGR equipment, next year they’ll almost certainly run current year, but for now, they don’t. Matt has done a good job in the second half of the year with LFR but will be replaced with Christopher Bell next year. A move to the #21 a defacto Penske car is nearly a step up.
Ryan Blaney took the famed #21 to victory lane in 2017 before moving to Penske in 2018. Menard has had speed in the car just never had the finishes to back it up. Even this past weekend he qualified second. So the Wood Brothers have speed it’s just a matter of putting a complete race together.
Come February Matt D. steps into the #21. The expectations will be higher than any seat he has previously been in. Three different teams in three years aren’t ideal but the step up in competitiveness is the correct career path for him at this point.
The good news is the Wood Brothers aren’t going away. Per their press release, it appears Menards will stay on board too. The Wood Brothers are betting on Matt’s talent considering he doesn’t bring sponsors. It’s nice to see a team hire a driver on talent.
Also, months ago TJ Majors said he heard Larson might end up at the #21. Obviously he knew something was in the works with Menard. Potentially the Wood Brothers did reach out to Larson’s camp. NASCAR Silly Season never disappoints.
