There’s just no way, right?
Erik Jones is in a contract year with Joe Gibbs Racing, you know that. We all know that it’s the most talked-about section of silly season this year. Over the weekend the tone changed in the dialogue between Joe Gibbs and the media.
For the last couple of months, we’ve heard from Jones’ camp that they were working on an extension to keep the former Truck Champ in the #20 car with JGR next season. That formal extension announcement hasn’t come yet, in fact, it’s a been nothing but talk about the extension talk since then.
Joe Gibbs At Pocono
Heading into this weekend Gibbs was very much on board with the extension talk. He was pretty committed to getting the extension worked out between JGR, Jones, and their partners.
At Pocono this weekend the tone changed a ton with Gibbs and his teams future with Erik Jones. There was no talk of an extension. Gibbs mainly said he’s keeping Jones updated along the way.
Boy was Joe noncommittal there. Talk about a guy that just beat around the bush with his answer. Obviously, he’s not going to come out and be like “yeah we’re done with him.” But he could have instilled a little more confidence in his driver who is desperately trying to make the playoffs.
Most of this has to be Toyota driven. Christopher Bell continues to impress everyone in the Xfinity Series and is easily the manufacturers #1 prospect by a mile. Naturally, they want him in the Cup Series and they want him with their flagship team. Sooner than later because they’ll lose him if they don’t.
Jones has underperformed at JGR, his three teammates all have at least three wins this season and he’s hasn’t been close outside of Sunday at Pocono. Unfortunately for him, he appears to be the odd man out. There’s no way anything he does this season outside of winning the championship keeps him at JGR.
The good news, someone is going to pick up Jones and he could very well stay within the Toyota family at Leavine Family Racing.
