Spire Sports Announced A Driver For Half The Cup Season And It’s Not Great

Spire Sports announced a driver for half of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series in the #77. Who is the driver?

Quin Houff.

Folks, that’s not great.

Like most fans, you’re probably asking, who? A fair question to ask considering Quin Houff has only made 10 Xfinity Series starts. In 2018 he made 5 starts with JD Motorsports and had an average finish of 25.8. In 2017 he made 5 starts for Gdovic and posted an average finish of 20.6. Not earth-shattering numbers but also not Vinnie Miller bad.

This is Quin Houff, now you can put the name to an unkown face 45 seconds ago.

Houff’s portion of the season will start at Phoenix whether he will be in the car for 17-18 races straight after Phoenix is unknown.

Spire Sports bought Furniture Row Racing’s #78 charter in the offseason and announced they would field the #77 Chevy Camaro full time in 2019. Last week the team announced Jamie McMurray would race for the team in conjunction with Chip Ganassi Racing for the Daytona 500 in a one off.

The expectation was for Spire Sports to have a rotating seat in 2019. Quin Houff was not on anyone’s guess list for. It’s an interesting choice that was likely financially aided.

For Houff this is a massive learning opportunity. He’s relatively inexperienced so the learning curve is going to be immense. However Alex Bowman talked about driving for a backmarker at the start of his cup career and mentioned it was actually really beneficial. From the stand point that if you mess up no one is looking unlike say Chase Elliott or William Byron.

Spire has yet to announce and alliance as well. They might be the most interesting team in the garage.
