JR Motorsports and GMS Racing are set to announce a driver development program Thursday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Dale Jr’s JRM team currently fields four full time teams in the Xfinity Series with three cars racing for the driver’s championship and the fourth a rotating seat for the owner’s championship. GMS Racing meanwhile will field one full time Xfinity car and two full-time trucks in 2019.
Details on the program are scarce but it’s safe to assume the deal will allow GMS Racing’s Truck Series drivers to compete for JRM in the Xfinity Series.
GMS will field trucks for defending series champ Brett Moffitt and defending ARCA champ Sheldon Creed in 2019. Both drivers with substantial upsides who know how to get the most out of their equipment.
JRM requires drivers to bring sponsorship to the team, GMS could be the supplier of that sponsorship. Maurice Gallagher owns Allegiant Airlines, the company is not sponsoring Johnny Sauter this season and John Hunter Nemecheck is bringing substantial sponsorship to the Xfinity program. Could we see Allegiant on the JRM #9 this year? High probability we do.
Thursday at 11:30 AM we’ll know more.
