Ross Chastain flexed on the NASCAR world when he was given a three race deal in Chip Ganassi’s #42 Xfinity car a few weeks back. Now it appears Chastain not only impressed fans but he impressed the owner. Chip Ganassi wants Chastain in his car and he wants him in 2019.

According to Stern putting Chastain in the car is top priority. Chastain scored one win, a second place finish and should have had another win if Kevin Harvick knew how to drive. You could make an argument Chastain would be a championship favorite if he was in the #42 during the entire playoffs.
Now it appears his test run with the team could turn into a full-time gig. Not only for Xfinity but you have to think once Kurt Busch is done in the #1 car that could be Chastain’s seat. Kurt Busch is rumored to be the next driver of the #1 car replacing Jamie McMurray in case anyone hadn’t heard that rumor for months.
Where does that leave John Hunter Nemechek? Not sure, he could return to CGR in the same part-time role or he could see opportunities elsewhere. Unfortunately for him Chastain came in and performed at an elite level where JHN has been strong just not elite.
Chastain does have a handshake deal to run a full Cup schedule for Premium Motorsports next season. This Xfinity deal could take precedence over that. Seeing drivers get an opportunity on talent is a refreshing change.
