Adam “Woj” Stern is at it again today. First, he says Daniel Suarez is still in talks with Stewart-Haas Racing and now he has something to say about the Leavine Family Racing #95.
According to Stern, the Leavine Family Racing team has a new name on their list now that Daniel Hemric has signed with RCR. Matt DiBenedetto’s name has popped up on their list for some reason. Either they see something talent-wise we’re missing or they’re huge r/NASCAR fans.
➖ LFR is still expected to switch to @Toyota.

DiBenedetto announced at Indianapolis this season that he would be leaving the #32 Go Fas Racing team following the 2018 season. He cited his desire to “bet on himself” like Ross Chastain and Ryan Preece have in the last 18 months. It’s a noble idea but will it work for him?
Like those other guys, DiBenedetto doesn’t bring a lot of sponsorship money if any. The difference between the three is DiBenedetto had an Xfinity driver development deal with Joe Gibbs Racing and massively underperformed. Because of that his stock fell and he has been relegated to the mid/back of the pack in the NASCAR Cup Series. In fairness, DiBenedetto was only 18 at the time of that JGR deal.
In the Cup Series DiBenedetto has recorded 4 Top-10’s in four seasons. One with BK Racing and three with Go Fas. Certainly not the stats that will catch anyone’s eyes but he tends to keep the car clean. Does he get the most out of the car? Sometimes. His average finish has increased year over year since joining the series in 2015. Personally, I don’t see a huge upside to him in terms of Cup talent.
Matt DiBenedetto has talent, to be an Xfinity driver. Zach and I talked about this on the podcast (check it out here) that some guys are better off recognizing their talent level and there is nothing wrong with that. DiBenedetto could have a great career as an Xfinity driver. A competitive Xfinity ride is exponentially cheaper than a Cup ride and DiBenedetto has enough experience to be a great Xfinity driver. Imagine being a fringe NBA player, you’re good but not great so teams don’t want you. However you’re a great G-League player, if the money was right you’d play there and dominate the league. Matt D should do that. Be the next Elliott Sadler and start yelling at kids.
LFR is switching to Toyota and will have TRD backing, that #95 car will be more competitive next year than this year. If Matt D can land it, it will be the best Cup car he has been in.
