If you don’t have MAVTV or you didn’t make the pilgrimage to the famed high banks of Salem Speedway Saturday night you missed short track racing at its best.
ARCA’s best took the whole “do battle” thing a little too seriously as Michael Self and Zane Smith accounted for 3 cautions together. 16-year old Chandler Smith took the lead on lap 1 and never looked back leading all 200. Which explains why after the race he looked at teammate Michael Self’s car on the hauler and said: “what happened here?”
Well, Chandler here’s what happened.
Incident #1: Early in the race, the #55 of Self was making moves up the leaderboard. As he passed Zane in turn 3 he slid up in front of him like you do at Salem. Zane wasn’t fond of the move and dumped the #55 off turn 4. According to Self after the race, Zane wasn’t happy Self got him loose off turn 2. To be fair everyone was getting loose off turn 2.
Incident #2: On the restart, the #55 lined up 5th behind Zane Smith in 3rd. As cars stacked up off turn 2 you can guess what happened. Self dumped Zane and spun him to the inside where the #41 made contact with the wall and seemingly damaged the radiator.
Incident #3: Zane Smith’s MDM team repaired his car after about 40 laps and sent him back out on track. While you would think it was to maybe salvage some points you’d be wrong. The #41 waited on Self and attempted to wreck him in turn 1 but missed Danica Patrick style. He didn’t miss going into turn 3 as he pulled a Scott Speed and demolished the #55 of Michael Self. Watch the video from the stands below.
After the crash Self walked over to where Zane parked his car in the infield. No punches were thrown but Self was lifted and carried out of the scrum. (sorry for the focus was set on manual and didn’t pay attention in the scramble to grab the camera).
After the race, we talked to Michael Self on the podcast. He explained what he thought happened and shared his side of the story. Self also had some things to say about Zane. From saying he’s never had to work for anything in his life to calling him a rich kid. Michael Self didn’t hold back. Give it a listen!
Saturday night short track racing at its best. When ARCA visits Salem it’s never a dull moment. If you’re within a 2-hour drive of the famed high banks you owe it to yourself to make the trek out there.
