Tony Donohoue of 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis got the internets talking on Sunday when he said this about Team Penske’s future plans;
Don’t be surprised if @Team_Penske goes 4 full times Indy Car teams next year
— Tony Donohue (@TonyD1070) August 5, 2018
Penske adding a fourth car would go against what the team said after 2017 when they downsized to three full-time cars and sent Helio Castroneves out to pasture aka IMSA. But now one year later they’re looking to add a fourth car. But why?
Either Roger really likes dominating the series and wants to add a 4th All-Star to his lineup to ensure they win over half the races. Or there is an offer on the table that his business-centric mind literally cannot refuse.
Here are some of the ideas of who could be in that 4th car;
Fernando Alonso – McLaren want to continue their relationship with Fernando but the 2-time champ is tired of battling for 10th in F1. Since the team can’t give him a race winning car why not send him off to IndyCar so he can hopefully win the Indy 500 and complete the Triple Crown?
Andretti has always been rumored to be the IndyCar landing spot for Alonso but there is a hang-up. Alonso drives for Toyota in WEC, Andretti runs Honda-powered cars in IndyCar, there’s a conflict of Japanese interests there. However Team Penske races for Chevrolet, Alonso could race for them. McLaren and Penske teaming up is a mashup of two iconic racing names, a marketing dream that would put McLaren in America and Penske in Europe. Also, Alonso brings immense talent and star power to Team Penske, something the corporate robots love.
Robert Wickens – Penske has already inquired about Wickens according to Paul Tracy. However, Sam Schmidt said he learned his lesson with Pagenaud and Penske and said Wickens is signed to a 5-year deal. Penske could buy it out but a 4-year buyout seems excessive even for the bottomless pockets of Team Penske.
Scott Dixon – Every year Penske toys with Ganassi and stealing Dixon but this year feels different. For the first time, Dixon leaving Ganassi feels like it could happen and Penske is the most logical landing spot if McLaren doesn’t field their own team. Maybe Roger just likes keeping Chip on his toes by letting him know he’ll always be the little brother to Team Penske.
Alexander Rossi- the hottest American commodity since Josef Newgarden is signed to Andretti but you know Penske could pay more. However, Rossi seems content at Andretti but his personality and mannerisms are peak Team Penske.
Colton Herta – would Bryan Herta’s kid really jump ship from the family team/Andretti and head to the evil empire that is Team Penske? For some reason people think this is an option, realistically it is not. Herta can drive, but he’s an Indy Lights driver and Penske hasn’t run a true rookie since 1999. Although the Steinbrenner name combined with Team Penske would probably have some great B2B deals and we all know Penske loves B2B deals. Fitzgerald, Wabash, AAA, literally all of them.
Alonso at Penske would be awesome from a pure competition standpoint. Fernando doesn’t seem to fit the Penske mold with the brash comments, the skateboarding, etc. but winning is winning and Fernando just wants to win.
