Lewis Hamilton Wins The German Grand Prix With Help And By Doing Something He’s Never Done

A day after a disastrous qualifying session that saw Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes stranded on track as he desperately tried to push it back to pit lane, the Brit saw a reversal of fortune.

Lewis Hamilton went from 14th on the starting grid to the top of the podium in the German Grand Prix. A race that saw rain, a safety car, team orders and a whole lot of passing also saw Hamilton do something he had never done before. Before Sunday Hamilton had never won a race outside of the top six starting positions, that changed as he charged his way through the field and his pit wall played the strategy came correctly.

Hamilton clawed his way up to the top 5 before Sebastian Vettel had his off which set up a quirky sequence of events. Valtteri Bottas inherited the lead and pitted, that gave the lead to Raikkonen who also pitted. Pretty standard until a video surfaced of Hamilton also being called into the pits. He committed to the pit lane but darted back out on track after passing the bollard.

The pit wall called him in then told him to stay out then called him in again but he was already back on track. Passing that bollard is the real point of contention and as of writing, this Hamilton has been summoned to the stewards so the race results still are not official.
Hamilton was aided by that move as he inherited the lead and led from that point until the finish of the race. A finish that was team ordered by the Mercedes management. Valtteri Bottas was quicker than Hamilton and likely could have passed him if the team didn’t tell him to hold the position.
So to recap Hamilton drove his ever living balls off, fact. Also facts, the team ordered Bottas not to pressure him, the pit lane maneuver may be illegal, Vettel crashed. Racing is a weird sport where you have to put yourself in position to win, Hamilton did just that and that wins championships. People can bemoan his win all they want but the truth is he got to the flag first.
Vettel’s off cost him immensely. What would have been a championship extender for the German in front of his home crowd instead turned into him crying on the radio pounding the steering wheel. A little moisture on the track in the stadium section caught the four-time champ out and sent him right into the gravel and barrier. Vettel was gaining time as the rain was falling and ultimately him pushing that hard cost him a key opportunity.
One last note from the finish, Kimi Raikkonen got his 98th career podium. The drive to 100 podiums is alive and well for the man of few words.
