Somehow Spencer Gallagher Wins The Xfinity Race At Talladega

Yeah, that headline is correct. John Wes Townley with a personality, Mr. Spence Gallagher is now a winner in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series. A late race caution aided by drivers running out of gas allowed Gallagher to pilot his #23 to a win at Talladega.

Saturday’s race at Talladega was the exact opposite of what people expected it to be. Instead of an intense pack race, it was a single file and then strung out fuel mileage race. It was more like the 2004 Daytona 500 or the 2003 Pepsi 400 when Greg Biffle got his first win. At one point Justin Allgaier had a 25 second lead with 10 laps to go. That’s unheard of at a restrictor plate track.

The biggest incident of the day was a lap 34 wreck on the backstretch that collected 7 cars. It would have been less but Spencer Boyd and his Grunt Style Camaro decided to hoo-rah their way through the wreck like a Sherman tank in Berlin. Just an absolute bulldozer move that has no business on a race track. (Look for the black #76 that comes in from the back).

Late in the race, as it looked like it would come down to fuel mileage the #22 of Austin Cindric was sitting second it was who was behind that was the real story. JD Motorsports had their #0 and #01 running third and fourth, BJ McLeod was fifth. I think I speak for the country when I say we wish one of those guys won the race. Instead, Daniel Hemric and Goodyear had to ruin all of our potential fun.

A late race restart was delayed as the #7 ran out of fuel. And then another car and another car. Until finally the field was able to take the green flag and at that point, the #22 ran out of fuel from the lead. With the #22 out of the way that allowed Tyler Reddick in the #9 and the three JGR cars to duke it out.

Spencer Gallagher ran a smart race, that sentence has never been penned before. Saturday, however, the #23 kept his nose clean and made a power move side draft into turn one on the final lap to take the lead from Reddick and the win. Gallagher never got a truck series win before his dad moved him up to Xfinity but he made good on that today. First-time winners are always fun regardless if their family has more money than most and the family business is responsible for numerous people having their lives flash before their eyes at 30k feet.

But you can bet your sweet as corporate 401k ass that Maurice Gallagher is buying a cup car and sending Spence to the big leagues in 2019. He should let Spencer invest in some veneers to cover up those civil war era wool teeth. COME ON, MAN.

On a side note, Elliott Sadler won the Dash 4 Cash for the second week in a row. He restarted with 2 laps to go in 20th and finished 5th, relatively impressive for the man who yells at young drivers. Teammate Justin Allgaier went from running out of gas with 4 laps to go to finishing 3rd after starting in the back with 2 to go. Actually good.

Xfinity cars are back on track Saturday in Dover for another all Xfinity driver race. That’s also Derby Day for everyone in the commonwealth.
