Jeffery Earnhardt Lands NASCAR Cup Series Ride For The 2018 Daytona 500

That boy went an did it!

Jeffery Earnhardt has a full-time (maybe?) NASCAR Cup Series ride for the 2018 season and more importantly will keep the Earnhardt name in the Daytona 500 for the 40th consecutive year. There was a hot rumor earlier in the offseason he was trying to get a deal together with RCR and their third car. That’s not happening but his new team has a connection with his family name.

StarCom Racing will run the #00 for Earnhardt (or maybe others) in 2018. The startup team acquired a charter this offseason meaning they are guaranteed a spot in all 36 races. The team is run by former Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope.

That’s where the connection is at. Derrike Cope is relevant in 2018 NASCAR because of Jeffery’s grandfather. Dale Earnhardt should have won the 1990 Daytona 500 but on the last lap, he ran over a piece of metal that came off Rick Wilson’s car when he blew his engine. That metal piece shredded Dale’s tire as he went into turn 3. Cope slid by on the inside and claimed the win and immediately became a trivia answer.

Now 28 years later the dust has settled and the zombies have subsided, also Jeffery Earnhardt has a ride. StarCom will have growing pains but a new team running a full season is good for the sport. All that we need now is for Jeffery to pose with the StarCom team for the Christmas card.

Ps. StarCom, if you need someone to do photoshop or graphics there are people available.
