According to Autoweek IndyCar CEO has confirmed the series is working with Danica Patrick to secure a ride for the Indianapolis 500. The two teams he mentioned that are under consideration for the one time Indy star are Dryer Reinbold Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing.
Astute (big word properly used) readers of the blog will remember we mentioned DRR has a likely landing spot for Danica. Her brother in law is the team manager at DRR and her dad mentioned DRR by name when asked about possibilities for Indy. A team made up of Sage Karam and Danica Patrick is must-watch television.
Ed Carpenter Racing
Ed Carpenter Racing is a bit of a surprise to see. ECR has run three cars at the speedway before in 2016. In 2018 they have Spencer Pigot racing for the championship, and then Ed Carpenter racing the ovals and splitting the ride with Jordan King who will be racing the street courses and road courses. That leaves a third car open for Indianapolis and it is HIGHLY unlikely considering they fired him after his home race.
Since ECR’s inception in 2012, the team has an average finish in the 500 of 15th. With a best finish of 3rd with Josef Newgarden in 2016. The team also has 2 poles with Ed in back to back seasons. ECR has speed but has trouble putting an entire race together.
Danica at ECR would be something. Ed Carpenter is a weird fellow, just kind of quiet, weird sense of humor, nice enough guy though. Danica is as intense as anyone has ever been. She’s the James Harrison of female athletes, just a cyborg that sometimes cries and looks at astronomy charts. In another life, Danica is undoubtedly an MMA fighter dating Chuck Lidell or whoever is a big MMA fighter.
Dreyer Reinbold Racing
DRR would have the most resources to invest in her. They race one race a year and put all of their efforts into it. Sage Karam has had fast cars with them before he attempted to return them to their natural element with the help of a wall. ECR has a lot of resources and the benefit of teammates. It’s a toss up but both are really solid rides to land if you can’t slip into that third Ganassi car.
Since 2012 DRR has an average finish of 16.33 in the 500. Sage Karam has turned in the two worst results last season and 2016 with finishes of 32nd and 28th. The team did get a Top 10 with Sage Karam in 2014 when he won rookie of the race. In 2012 they recorded a 4th place finish with Oriol Servia. DRR has speed but lacks the teammate resource ECR has.
Hopefully, Danica’s announcement comes soon, it sounds like her Daytona 500 deal is already complete and they are waiting for the Indy 500 deal to be finalized before they announce.
