Alright so here’s the deal. Toro Rosso runs Renault engines and will be switching to Honda engines in 2018. The Renault engines in the back of the Toro Rosso’s recently have been grenading at an alarming rate. Brendon Hartley has been in the car 3 weekends and had engine failures all three weekends. Something is up there.
That video of Renault’s Cyril Abiteboul and Red Bull’s Helmut Marko was in response to a letter the Toro Rosso team put out. Essentially in the letter, they suggested that Renault was sabotaging the engines they were receiving. Renault and Toro Rosso are competing for the same spot in the constructor’s championship. It’s a conspiracy theory but certainly, one that has some backing considering the engine performance from the last 3 races.
This isn’t over yet. Helmut Marko and Red Bull are outspoken. Generally, their words don’t carry much weight but they’re not afraid to call out Renault. Red Bull Racing has made a career out of criticizing the performance of Renault engines. Now the junior team is doing the same.
Renault could very well decide not to supply Toro Rosso with engines for Abu Dhabi in two weeks. Midseason manufacturer changes are rare but they are certainly possible. We could see Toro Rosso switch to Honda in Abu Dhabi should Renault pull their support. F1 drama is second to none, it’s a reality show each weekend.
