Sorrey. SPM is set to be the nicest team in the paddock next season. Robby Wickens and Jamesy Hinchcliffe are about to say hello to everyone in America. Canada’s greatest exports outside of Wayne Gretzky and Ryan Gosling. All while spreading the kind nature of Canadians, maple syrup, and the joys of Molson.
Robert Wickens joins Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for the 2018 season to partner his friend and former A1GP teammate James Hinchcliffe. Need some light reading for today? Check out the Wikipedia page for A1GP, what a time to be alive when that series existed. It has been a decade since the two were teammates but these two haven’t missed a beat.
Since A1GP Wickens has 6 DTM wins, 15 podiums and a Formula Renault 3.5 Series Championship. Hinchliffe has gone on to be the Canadian superstar in America. Mayor of his own town, dating dime after dime all while turning on the charm. Now the two team up to conquer America. And Canada, also maybe Mexico.
Wickens is an interesting pick having no IndyCar experience and being 29 when the season starts next year. However, he must have impressed the team when he subbed for Aleshin at Road America practice last season. It’s nice to see a fast team give a relative unknown a chance rather than signing a veteran with nothing left in the tank.
Robert Wilkens, welcome to America. If you don’t wear a Canadian tuxedo at some point this season we will be highly disappointed. Better be carrying a Molson, blasting Alanis Morrisette while handing out bottles of syrup. Couldn’t be more Canadian than that. Maybe add some Avril Lavigne in there if you’re feeling a little risque.
