Is There A Chance Alexander Rossi Could Race For Toro Rosso At The USGP?

Alexander Rossi re-signed with Andretti Autosport a few weeks ago as the hottest commodity in the IndyCar paddock. Rossi’s name is now coming up for a different ride. One that isn’t a Honda-powered IndyCar with Andretti sponsors on it. Instead, it has a bull on the engine cover and a Renault attached to the back.

That’s right, rumors are floating around that Alexander Rossi could sub for Pierre Gasly at the United States Grand Prix for Toro Rosso later this month. Gasly is in contention for the Super Formula championship and conflicting reports out of Honda are they’d like to see him attempt to win it at the finale. Gasly took over for Danil Kvyat who is now taking over for the departing Carlos Sainz which leaves Toro Rosso down a driver but winners at musical chairs.

“No Merit”

Alexander Rossi’s spokesperson said there is no merit to the rumors he could fill in at Toro Rosso. Rossi makes sense for a sub role considering his familiarity with a Formula One care. Only being two years removed, Rossi could still hop in a car and finish the race for Toro Rosso. In 6 starts with Manor F1, you could argue Rossi gave the car a better run than his teammate. Having Rossi come back to the series as an Indy 500 winner and at the USGP would be massive for American fans. Finally, we’d have one of our own to cheer for.

Nevertheless, it appears Rossi is in Europe filming a reality show. Surely that is going to be an electric show wherever it airs full of personality, laughs, and good-naturedness.

Who Will It Be?

The FIA has made it increasingly hard to obtain a super license recently. So the number of “qualified” candidates is pretty low. Sebastian Buemi appears to be the front-runner for the season. Outside of him Robert Kubica, Sergey Sirotkin, Antonio Giovinazzi (guaranteed wreck), and even IndyCar champ Josef Newgarden have all been mentioned by the German F1 press.

Buemi is on the payroll at Red Bull. It makes all the sense in the world you use him since he is already comfortable with the team. Buemi is perfectly capable of being an F1 driver, like many guys though things just didn’t work out.

This is all contingent on Gasly running the Super Formula race. As it stands Helmut Marko said he is running it, Honda has said it is up to Gasly if he wants to run. According to Marko, we’ll find out on Tuesday.
