There it is, a devastating blow for Richard Petty Motorsports. Smithfield Foods the sponsor of the #43 car for the previous 6 seasons will leave the team at the end of the season for greener pastures. (Get it, food company, greener pastures?) Stewart-Haas Racing picks up a major sponsor with deep pockets, something that team has lacked this season. SHR has spent the majority of their season seeking sponsorship for drivers Clint Bowyer and Danica Patrick.
No word on who the driver of the SHR Smithfield car will be in 2018. Rumors have Aric Almirola following Smithfield to SHR but with no official word that lets speculation run wild. Will Smithfield hop on the #14 or the #41 next season or will Almirola really be headed to the #10 with Smithfield? Hard to tell but earlier in the season Almirola was shopping himself and Smithfield as a package.
Awful News For RPM
One week ago RPM and Smithfield had a handshake agreement that would keep the #43 wrapped in Smithfield logos. A week later RPM is left on the corner watching their old girlfriend ride away in a new Mustang with gaudy loud exhaust. Now RPM is left looking for a new sponsor with about 5 months left until the Daytona 500.
RPM has a few races sponsored for 2018 but not nearly enough for an entire season. We could see them take the Wood Brothers approach and run a partial season on tracks they think they can be competitive on. At this point that seems like the best case scenario for the famed #43.
