Kasey Kahne Out At Hendrick In 2018
Not exactly breaking news but everything in NASCAR is #BreakingNews these days. Kasey Kahne likely knew he was going to be out of his #5 ride when he tweeted this out to his 847k followers on June 5th:
I love racing and still have a ton of drive. All I want to do is perform and win again. I'm not done yet!

As soon as that tweet hit the internet his time at Hendrick Motorsports was over. Two months later a 10am press release confirms that Kasey Kahne will need to find a ride for the 2018 season. Kahne has a lot of drive left in him, he can still win and likely just needs the right team around him. Everyone though Kahne would flourish when he got in the #5 car. However six years and six wins later that has not been the case.
Kahne will be on the grid in 2018, where though is the real question. In terms of high quality rides there are two really good rides available and then some mediocre ones. Stewart Haas Racing will likely have one seat open, could Kasey end up there? Or could he end up in the #77 Furniture Row Racing car? Kahne would be a great fit for sponsor 5 Hour Energy. If he doesn’t get one of those rides maybe we see him end up at RCR or a lower level team.
Who Takes Over The #5?
That’s the million dollar question right now. We’ll multi-million if they want a veteran or literally just the million dollar question if they go with a younger name. Matt Kenseth is the name at the top of everyone’s list for the #5 car to keep the seat warm for William Byron. What about Kurt Busch? The Daytona 500 winner is a free agent but SHR say’s they want him back.
Could Xfinity rookie phenom William Byron make the move? Hendrick would like to keep him in Xfinity one more year but they could fast track the future to a cup ride. Byron puts himself in position to win and seems to have all the luck. 10 wins in NASCAR over the last year and a half is a ton of wins that only Kyle Busch can really contend with.
Matt Kenseth 5/1
William Byron 6/1
Kurt Busch 45/1
Carl Edwards: just stop.
