Thursday morning on SiriusXM NASCAR former driver Mike Skinner made a really dumb comment on the substitute driver of the famed Richard Petty #43. Aric Almirola is out for at least the next 6 weeks with a fractured back from a wreck in Kansas. Reagan Smith filled in for the team at the All-Star race, Coke 600 and last weekend at Dover.
Heading into Pocono this weekend Darrell Wallace Jr. will be subbing for Almirola and will maintain the ride until he is ready to return to the series. Bubba Wallace deserves this ride, he has paid his dues in the Camping World Truck Series and the Xfinity Series. A deserving driver who is on the come up finally gets a chance to prove himself instead of another veteran getting the ride.
Mike Skinner has a problem with that. He believes Richard Petty Motorsports should have given the seat to Greg Biffle because he could get the #43 to victory lane. Mike Skinner who has exactly the same amount of cup wins as Bubba Wallace, zero. Except for those two wins in Japan. That guy thinks he knows who could win in the #43, and that guy is Greg Biffle who is 47 and hasn’t won since 2013. Yeah that is the guy that is going to return the #43 to victory lane. Ok Mike, ok.
No One Can Win In The #43
Aric Almirola can’t win in the #43, Greg Biffle can’t and Bubba Wallace likely won’t. The #43 last went to victory lane at Daytona in July of 2014. Their best finish since then was a second by Brian Scott at Talladega last fall. Other than that this is not a winning team at the moment. This is not about winning though, this is about letting a young guy get starts and turn laps in hopes of landing a cup ride for 2018.
That ride may even be with RPM but the young guys need to get these seats over the veterans. In NASCAR the veterans are what holds the sport back. Some of these guys will be in the series 15-20 years for their career but serve no purpose after year 7. Then they hang around and fill in for guys that are hurt when everyone knows they won’t win. They’re just there for someone they did a decade ago.
Meanwhile there are a litany or young drivers that should get a shot at a cup ride but won’t because the old guard won’t leave. RPM pulled a Packers/Favre and said thanks but we’re going to go with this younger guy and see what he can do. Biffle had a good career, it’s time he transitions to a new life.
As for Mike Skinner, how about you stick to acting like the fat stereotypical american on The Grand Tour.
