“We Knew How To Win Today” Kyle Larson Wins At Auto Club Speedway: Recap

Kyle Larson and his #42 Target team have been off to the hottest start in recent memory this season. A 12th place finish in the Daytona 500 (ran out of gas leading on the last lap) then saw the kid rack off three straight 2nd place finishes.┬áLarson wouldn’t be denied at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday though.

Bullet Point Recap:

  • Right at the green flag Denny Hamlin stacked up the field which resulted in Brad Keselowski, Ryan Newman and Kevin Harvick to all get damage.

  • Brad Keselowski got the worst of the damage body/tire wise and he spun out into the infield grass. He recovered though so don’t you worry about him blue deuce fans.

  • After that the rest of stage one was pretty much the Kyle and Martin show. Larson would go on to win stage 1 easily.
  • Start of stage 2 saw Martin Truex wax the field. He owned them, had a six second lead and waltzed right to the Stage 2 win. Larson would finish second. The most exciting thing from Stage 2 was McDowell losing a tire.
  • Great racing throughout the field though. Auto Club Speedway provides 5/6 lanes of racing.
  • Stage 3 the longest stage went by rather quick at first. Then all hell broke loose.
  • Gray Gaulding brought out the caution with 20 to go after cutting a tire down. More on BK Racing later.

  • As Larry McReynolds loves to mention, cautions breed cautions. Today was no different. The final 20 laps took as long as the previous 180 laps took.
  • On the next restart Matt Kenseth would take his second hard hit in back to back weeks. Why walls like that still exist in NASCAR is mind boggling stupid on the track and NASCAR’s part. Don’t preach safety and allow walls like that to be allowed.

  • After that caution was cleaned up, the other BK racing car decided to bring out a caution. Corey LaJoie kept his caution streak alive by spinning out. This BK Racing line up is truly awful, like early 2000’s Rays bad. Winless Detroit Lions bad.
  • Under that caution the #11, #78 and #1 stayed out while Larson and the rest of the leaders hit the pits in a slow version of Days of Thunder. Larson won the battle off pit road and thusly the P4 starting spot on the out side.
  • On this restart Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse got together thus giving life to RickyvsTrevor.com.
  • Last restart, Kyle Larson got away and pulled away. Brad Keselowski came home second, Clint Bowyer rose from the ashes of HScott Motorsports for a third place finish and Martin Truex came home fourth.

Final Thoughts

Really solid racing all day today. Most of it you had to catch in the back of shots because the FOX producer focused on cars running by themselves most of the time. Kyle Larson finally got the monkey off his back, second place finishes are great. Closing the deal is what matters. He had a number of restarts to throw it away today and didn’t. The #42 team is real.

Hendrick Motorsports might be in some trouble, more on that tomorrow. Other than that the series moves to Martinsville next weekend. Have to think that Auto Club getting a second date again would be better than Vegas getting a second.
